Jason Smith

The Golborne Band would like to announce the appointment of Jason Mark Smith as their new Musical Director. This follows his more recent position as MD of the Whitworth Vale and Healey Band, Rochdale.
Jason works as the Wider Opportunities Brass Leader for the St Helens Music Service teaching 550 young brass players between the ages of 7 and 11. He lives at home with girlfriend Kelly and has one son Matthew James, also a cornet player of whom he is very proud.
As a conductor, Jason’s success includes taking the Carrbrook Band to its highest North West area result for 12 years last year, building a band from 6 players into a quite formidable outfit. Additional bands conducted also include The Horbury Victoria band and The Championship Section Band United Co op Milnrow as Assistant Conductor.
As a player, Jason plays Flugel Horn with the Ashton Under Lyne Band in the Championship Section. This, after Principal Cornet in the Milnrow Co op Band. Jason has more prominently been recognised as a Flugel Horn Player for approximately 18 Years. His Championship career started in 1986 with Besses O’th Barn on second Cornet under the directorship of Roy Newsome, before promotion to Repiano Cornet. He then moved to Brighouse and Rastrick in 1989 under the leadership of Derek Broadbent and Les Beavers, to take up the Repiano Cornet seat.
Upon leaving Brighouse, Jason changed instrument to take up the Flugel Horn, which started a successful period with bands such as Blackburn & Darwen, Stalybridge and the BT Band. He then returned to Milnrow, (his first ever band) to embark on a steady progression from 4th Section to Championship where he contributed as player and Assistant Conductor to much of their success.
Jason also has had the great pleasure of playing with some of the great players in several prestigious concerts and contests which include 6 British Opens and 10 National Final appearances. He has also recorded CD’s with Brighouse and Milnrow.
Jason comments, “As a conductor, I would hope that I can use my experience of such conductors as Major Peter Parkes, Dr. Roy Newsome, Les Beavers and Dave Morris, who have all touched my playing career at some point and always led with Integrity and enthusiasm. If I can pass on a small percentage of what I have learned from these great conductors then I am sure this will bring the success required to the Golborne Band”.
“It is evident that there is a great history here and I feel privileged and proud to be given the opportunity to be part of Golbornes’s heritage. There is a great mixture of experience and
youth, together with a unique enthusiasm here. I now welcome, and indeed relish the challenge of my new role and am sure with the commitment and enthusiasm I have already witnessed we can enjoy our time and progress well together”. “In my employment, I am passionate, proud and committed to encouraging young players to enjoy the brass instrument and am hoping to collaborate with local education organisations to promote this also at Golborne. This can only be good for the area as a whole.”
