Death of Les Webb

It is with the deepest sadness that Golborne Brass Band announces the passing of our beloved Musical Director, Les Webb.

Les joined Golborne Brass Band in May 2022, bringing with him a wealth of experience at the very highest level of the brass band world, having held the Principal Trombone position with the legendary Fairey Band and having played for other elite outfits including Foden’s Band and Grimethorpe Band.

His infectious energy and guiding motto — “music is fun” — shaped every rehearsal and performance, and carried the band to extraordinary success. After winning the North West Fourth Section Area contest in 2023 and earning promotion to the Third Section, Les then led the band to the ultimate honour — National Champions at Cheltenham in 2024 — which gained us promotion to the Second Section. It was a journey that will never be forgotten.

Les made the bandroom a place of joy, laughter, and purpose. He believed in every single one of us, and we believed in him.

The band, our families, and the wider brass band community have lost a truly special person. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to his partner Amy Partington — herself a familiar and valued face in the band room as a regular dep, and very much part of the Golborne family — and to all of Les’s loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.
